USC Equestrians top Auburn 10-9

Hunt seat freshman Sally Henry

Four days after the passing of her mother, University of South Carolina equestrian coach and Blythewood resident Boo Major and her second-ranked Gamecocks defeated No. 3 Auburn, 10-9 Thursday, giving S.C. its first official SEC win. The Southeastern Conference added the sport of equestrian for the 2012-13 season, and Thursday’s meet was the first ever head-to-head SEC meet for both Auburn and South Carolina.

The Gamecocks are now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in SEC play, while the Tigers fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

“This was a big win for us today, no doubt about it,” Major said. “To be a good team, you have to beat good teams, and I think that’s what our riders have done two weekends in a row, but especially today against a tough Auburn team. Our girls rode well today, and to get a big win like this on only three days of practice says a lot about this group.”

South Carolina does not compete again until Nov. 3, when the Gamecocks travel to Bishop, Ga. to face the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs.

The Gamecocks practice and compete at their home base, One Wood Farm in Blythewood.
