Griffins Sweep Chester, Great Falls

Friday night, the Fairfield Central basketball teams swept the Cyclones of Chester in what has become a competitive rivalry in Fairfield County. The girls’ team started the double header off as they cruised to 57-37 victory over Chester.

At the half the Lady Griffins held onto a slight lead at 22-20 but used a strong push in the third quarter to take a 42-33 lead going into the fourth quarter. Fairfield Central went on a 10-2 run to start the final frame as the Lady Griffin defense held the Cyclones to just four points in the final eight minutes. Chester struggled to hit their foul shots, making just five of 19 at the line. Jada Martin led Fairfield Central in scoring with a game high 23 points. Saturday night Martin racked up 19 points in a 61-10 win at Great Falls. Fairfield Central remains undefeated at 6-0 and will not play again until Dec. 26.

The boys’ team capped off the double header with a 53-43 win over the Cyclones. Chester scored the first bucket of the game but the lead would be short lived as it would be the only timeFairfieldwould trail in the game. Fairfield’s Victor Alston beat the first half buzzer with a basket and the Griffins took a 28-16 lead into the locker room at the break. During halftime the Griffins football team was recognized as for their accomplishments during 2012. The trophy ceremony included a Region III-2A title and the state runner up.

During the third quarter Fairfield stretched their lead out to as much as 16 points and led 40-25 to start the fourth quarter. Halfway through the fourth quarterChesterused six straight free throws to climb to within nine but that is as close as they would get. Daniel Maple led the Griffins with 20 points including three three-pointers. On Saturday night the Griffins were able to win atGreat Falls47-42. Their next game is against Landrum on Dec. 20.
