The South Carolina Equestrian team will head into the mid-season break as the No. 1 team in the country, it was announced this week.
In the most split coaches poll of the season, the Gamecocks held onto the top spot over Auburn, as Carolina received six of 11 first-place votes, while the Tigers received four first-place votes in the final coaches poll of the fall semester.
The Gamecocks likely retained the top spot because of their 2-2 road record this season, with wins at Georgia and Texas A&M. Auburn competed on the road only once this season, a 10-9 decision won by South Carolina.
South Carolina is currently 4-2 overall and 3-0 in SEC play, as the Gamecocks are the only SEC school with a perfect conference record.
The next coaches poll will be released in the spring, once teams have returned to action.
