Soccer: Lady Bengals Sweep Week, Boys Split

Blythewood’s Quenten Howard (17) deflects an Irmo pass during last week’s Region IV-4A match.

The Blythewood Lady Bengals soccer team (12-1, 6-0) won both of their games last week and headed into their spring break on an 11-game winning streak, still undefeated in Region IV-4A play. On March 26, Blythewood went on the road and shut out the Lady Cavaliers (6-6, 0-6) of Richland Northeast 6-0. Two days later the Lady Bengals winning streak was in jeopardy at Irmo (4-8, 3-3). The Lady Yellow Jackets took Blythewood into extra time tied up at 1-1; however, even extra time wasn’t enough to decide a victor and Blythewood would have to earn the win by beating Irmo in penalty kicks, 4-3. With that win Blythewood completed the season sweep of Irmo by a combined score of 6-1. The Lady Bengals are back in action on April 9 when they travel to play the Lady Vikings (9-5, 5-1) of Spring Valley. The Lady Vikings are the second place team in the region and fell to Blythewood 3-1 back on March 19. The Lady Bengals are ranked fourth in the state in class 4A and the defense has allowed only three goals in regular season play (13 games) with never more than one goal in a single game. All the while the offense averages 4.4 goals per game.

The Blythewood boys’ soccer team (6-4, 5-1) is ranked 14th in the state in class 4A. The Bengals went 1-1 this past week, starting with a 4-0 win at Richland Northeast (8-4, 4-2) on March 26. But on March 28 the Bengals lost their first region game to the Yellow Jackets (8-4, 5-1) of Irmo 5-1. Irmo is ranked eighth in the state and with the win over Blythewood split the season series with six goals from each side. The loss broke a five-game winning streak for the Bengals and created a tie for the top spot in Region IV-4A. Blythewood will return to the field on April 9 when they host the Vikings of Spring Valley (5-7, 2-3). The Vikings lost to Blythewood 3-0 back on March 19. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
