BLYTHEWOOD – The Dreher Blue Devils bounced back from a key region loss earlier in the week by thumping the Redhawks at Westwood Saturday afternoon, 53-42.

The Westwood gym was jam packed on both sides with hordes of very vocal fans. A good seat was at a premium for those who came to see a hard fought game between the top two teams in 3A Region IV.

“They are a good team. They are leading the region with only one loss to Camden,” Westwood head coach Terry Dozier said before the game. “I feel we can hold our own court. We need to come out and play our tough defense.

“Our destiny is in our own hands,” Dozier added. “Tevin Mack is key to their offense. If we can contain him and make it tough for him, we should be in good shape.”

The game looked like it would be a very close contest, as the Redhawks held Mack to a single basket in the first period. Jordan Watson hit a three-pointer for Westwood, and at the buzzer Westwood led 9-8.

The second period, however, would be critical for the Redhawks. The score in the period’s mid-point was still relatively even, with the Blue Devils leading by a single point, 14-13. Then the Blue Devils went on a tear, scoring another 14 points before the halftime buzzer, to Westwood’s mere five.

Rebounding was key in the third period, as Dreher kept up their momentum and made Westwood pay after every missed shot. Dreher’s offense put 13 points on the board early in the period to Westwood’s two. Westwood closed the gap before the end of the period, but it looked like some magic was needed to secure the win.

Undaunted, the Redhawks didn’t let up, and even brought the game to within eight points once or twice. However, they could get no closer, and ultimately lost by 11.

Mack was the high scorer for the Blue Devils with 20 points. For Westwood it was Watson with 12, including two three-pointers.

Westwood hosts Camden High School tonight. In their last matchup, Westwood beat the Bulldogs 38-34.
