GREAT FALLS – A Great Falls woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in the front yard of her home Saturday night in a freak incident that has drawn the attention of three law enforcement agencies.
Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey said Grace Hutto Goodwin, 47, was standing in the yard of her home at 16503 Highway 200, approximately 4 miles south of the town of Great Falls, talking with her boyfriend, Michael Craig Varnadore, 42, at 8 p.m. Saturday. Varnadore was behind the wheel of a 1999 Ford F-550 work truck, the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) reported, and Ramsey said Varnadore had just returned from a service call for his employer in the truck. The truck was low on fuel, Ramsey said, and Varnadore was turning the truck around in the yard to head back out to a nearby gas station.
As he was turning the truck around, Varnadore struck Goodwin and ran her over.
Goodwin was transported to Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster where she was pronounced dead at 11:32 p.m. from blunt force trauma, Ramsey said.
At press time, the incident was still being investigated by the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, the State Law Enforcement Division and the S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP).
