NEWBERRY – The Newberry Academy Eagles enjoyed their senior night Tuesday with a dominating 59-35 victory over the Eagles of Richard Winn.

Newberry Academy came into the game as the aggressor, opening the game on a 10-2 run as they dominated the post area on the offensive end. Early ball movement on the offensive end helped Richard Winn score some points against Newberry’s vicious zone play, but the most RWA could muster was a 5-spot after one quarter of play. Newberry, meanwhile, posted 16.

While the Newberry scoring run slowed somewhat, the hometown Eagles in the second period sank four straight 3’s. Those 3-point baskets gave the Eagles of Newberry Academy a 29-16 lead at the half.

Despite going on a brief scoring run to start the second half, RWA was never able to cut Newberry’s lead to single digits. Newberry banged out 20 third-quarter points to RWA’s 8, stretching their lead to 49-24. Offensive rebounds and second-chance points gave the Eagles of Newberry Academy another 10-0 scoring run down the stretch, keeping their foot on the gas and sealing the win.

Newberry Academy had four players in double figures. Mitchell Gibbons led the Eagles of Richard Winn with 15 points. Richard Winn returns home Friday (Feb. 6) to host King Academy on Senior Night.
