BLYTHEWOOD – In a reasonably close game up until the last inning, the Demons scored big in the seventh to defeat the Westwood Redhawks by a final score of 12-1. Lugoff-Elgin scored 8 runs in the final inning, with the scoreboard showing just a single run on the Redhawk side. Still, only three runs behind after the sixth inning, the ‘Hawks were still in it.
Westwood’s single run came in the fifth inning, beginning with Deante Gallman taking one hard on his left shoulder, advancing him to first base. Gallman advanced to second on a sacrifice fly from Gavin Burroughs. Connor Buck walked, giving Westwood runners on first and third. Campbell threw a wild pitch, and the throw to second to tag out Buck was muffed. The error gave Gallman time to make it home.
Things looked bright for Westwood because they were able to load the bases, hoping to get back a couple more runs. Unfortunately the next batter hit one into a fielder’s choice for the final out, leaving three players on base.
The seventh inning score-fest by the Demons put the game essentially out of reach for the Redhawks. The Demons were assisted by four Redhawk errors and a player hit by a pitch.
The winning pitcher was Elliott Campbell, and the losing pitcher was Westwood’s Ray Branson. Westwood had five errors on the night with L-E committing only one.
