Furman D. Mattox

Obit_Mattox copyBLYTHEWOOD – Furman D. Mattox, 78, of Blythewood, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016. Born Oct. 11, 1937 in Columbia, he was a son of the late Sam Alexander and Josephine Albert Mattox. Furman was a member of Killian Baptist Church for 58 years where he served as a Trustee, Deacon, Usher and on the host committee. He retired from the S.C. Air National Guard after 33 years, 26 of which were in supply at McEntire Joint National Guard Base. He then went to work with his family at Mattox Electric from which he retired after 26 years. He was an avid Gamecock fan and a member of the Gamecock Club for 45 years.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Berry Mattox; daughter, Josie Mattox Heilman of Blythewood; grandchildren, Chris Heilman, and Josh (Courtney) Heilman, and their son, Aiden, all of Blythewood; a sister, Doris Laffey of Elgin; brothers, Thomas (Sandra) Mattox of Newland, N.C., Laverne (Anne) Mattox of Peak, Kenneth (Sheila) Mattox of Blythewood; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Ruby Nelson, James Wiley Mattox, George Mattox, Jeane Mattox, Ronald Mattox and Jerry Mattox; as well as nieces, Pamela and Kim.

A funeral service will be held 3:30 o’clock, Thursday, April 21 at Killian Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. E. Benjamin Newman Jr., and the Rev. Richard A. Humphries officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o’clock, Wednesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Honorary pallbearers will be Furman’s coworkers from Mattox Electric, as well as Dr. Andy Gambrel, David Spencer, David Christmus, Lee Smith and Harry Thomas. Memorials may be made to Killian Baptist Church, 577 Killian Road, Columbia, S.C. 29203.
