Smalls Made Big Difference

In 2013 while on a scouting trip around Winnsboro for new businesses and possible Chamber members, I saw activity at the Bi-Lo Shopping Center.  Armed with a business card I entered the construction site. I was welcomed by a tall, graying, distinguished gentleman. We introduced ourselves, shook hands and that is how I met Mr. John Smalls.

Mr. Smalls talked about his plans for the large space as we toured the site, a full service venue for all types and sizes of events. His vision was exciting and was such a needed facility in Fairfield County.

Over the weeks as I visited the site soon to be Carolina Event Center watching the vision come to fruition, Mr. Smalls and I talked about the Chamber, benefits of membership and its purpose. We talked about education and preparing students to have a vocation when they graduate,  a way to make a living wage and become productive citizens. We talked about how to help entrepreneurs find their way to developing a successful business. Mr. Smalls was a compassionate, motivated man.

Mr. Smalls and Carolina Event Center, did join the Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce, he was on our Board of Directors, serving as Treasurer. He was very active on the committee that developed the Chamber’s “How to Start a New Business Workshop,” a seven week course on navigating the hoops of starting a new business. He supported the events of the Chamber making it a point to be present even if it meant selling wrist bands in the children’s amusements at Rock Around the Clock.

Thank you John for sharing your experience and vision for Fairfield County and beyond. You made a difference.

Terry N. Vickers, President

Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce
