NORTH CHARLESTON (Nov. 28, 2016) – The Blythewood Bengals’ playoff game against the Fort Dorchester Patriots Friday night showcased two of the premier junior quarterbacks in the state in Jordyn Adams and Dakereon Joyner. Both players displayed all their unique talents on the field trying to lead their teams to semi-finals of the Class 5A state playoffs, but it was a pair of late fourth-quarter scores by Joyner that ended the Bengals playoff run, 38-28.

Fort Dorchester started the game on fire taking only 1:20 off the clock and scoring in six plays as Joyner hit Adonicas Sanders for a 25-yard touchdown giving the Patriots an early 7-0 lead. After an interception thrown by Adams on the Bengals’ second possession, Joyner wasted no time hitting Sanders again for an 85 yard touchdown pass, making a 14-0 with 9:08 left in the first.

“I felt those quick scores in the first quarter hurt our momentum during the early stages of the game,” Bengals head coach Dan Morgan said.

After another quick Blythewood three-and-out, Tommy Hiott connected on a 31-yard field goal giving the Pat’s a 17-0 lead in the first.

The Bengal defense struggled earlier in the quarter but a Will Wallace fumble recovery gave the Bengals the ball back on the Patriots side of the field. Adams then hit Kameron Riley for a 6-yard touchdown pass cutting the lead 17-7.

Blythewood started the second quarter with a 10-play drive ending with Adams hitting Kenny Benton for a 26-yard touchdown pass, dropping their deficit to 17-14. Joyner countered 6 minutes later when he connected with Sanders for the third time, this one a 72-yard touchdown bomb to extend their lead to 24-14 at the half.

The Bengals started the third quarter with a quick three-and-out, hurting their chances at cutting into the Patriots lead. But the Blythewood defense then forced Joyner’s first error of the game – an interception into the hands of Cassius Garner, who returned it 42 yards giving Blythewood great field position.

“I felt that we had our opportunities to win this game,” Morgan said. “Cassius’ interception was a big play for us in the early stages of the third quarter. I felt that could have been the big momentum swing we needed.”

Chris Woodall scored on the next play, with a 3-yard touchdown blast to bring the Patriots lead down to 24-21.

Joyner opened the fourth quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run that appeared to be the first nail in Blythewood’s coffin. But the Bengals would not wither so easily. Adams led Blythewood on a seven-play, 80-yard drive that Woodall polished off with a 14-yard run. That kept the Bengals within striking distance at 31-28 with a little more than 10 minutes left in the game.

Joyner sealed the deal, however, with a 20-yard touchdown run after a strong nine-play drive that put Blythewood away, 38-28.

“I am proud of our guys this season, and despite the outcome of the game tonight I will go to battle with these guys any day,” Morgan said. “I always hate letting our seniors go out with a loss, but I feel real good with the young nucleus we have. I feel like we can make a huge run in 5A football next season.”

Blythewood finishes the season at 8-4. Fort Dorchester (11-1) moves on to face Conway this Friday.
