Speed, Alcohol Suspected in Fatal Crash

JENKINSVILLE (Nov. 30, 2016) – A Newberry woman was killed early Friday morning in a single-car accident after leaving a night club near Jenkinsville.

Fairfield County Coroner Barkley Ramsey said Lisa Jackson, 47, of Wright Street in Newberry, was in the front passenger seat of a 2012 Chevrolet Impala being driven by her cousin as they and another passenger in the back seat left the Déjà vu Club at 177007 Newberry Road, heading west toward Newberry.

At approximately 2 a.m., according to the S.C. Highway Patrol, the Impala ran off the left side of the road 7.5 miles north of Jenkinsville and struck a utility pole. Even though she was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the Highway Patrol said, Jackson was ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Ramsey said.

The driver and the passenger in the rear of the Impala were both transported by EMS to Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Ramsey said.

Ramsey said both speed and alcohol are suspected as factors in the crash. The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident.
