Lady Eagles Make Short Work of Cambridge

WINNSBORO (Jan. 4, 2017) – The Richard Winn Lady Eagles notched their first victory of the new year Tuesday night by clobbering the Cambridge Academy Cougars, and they thoroughly dominated all 24-minutes of this one en route to a 51-12 victory.

“We’re more guard oriented,” Eagles’ head coach Jessie Stidham said, “so we tried to speed the game up a lot because we can run. I really emphasize running since we’re coming off Christmas Break, and everybody is kind of out of shape, but I’ve got to commend the other team because they didn’t give up, and that’s something that says a lot about their coaching and team.”

Richard Winn scored the first bucket of the game, and that was as close as Cambridge would come to the lead for the rest of the one-sided contest. The Lady Eagles opened the contest with a four-minute 15-0 run, and they outscored Cambridge 26-3 in the first.

Alyssa Atkerson, Meredith Pope and Lydia Wilder went off on the Cougars in the first quarter. Atkerson had 11 points in the first, Wilder had seven and Pope followed closely behind with six.

A 23-point Lady Eagle lead continued to grow in the second, despite the fact that Richard Winn only scored five in the period. The stifling Richard Winn defense pitched another single-digit scoring quarter in the second when Cambridge scored just a single basket, and Jessica Steeps was responsible for every Cambridge point scored in the first half.

Cambridge had their most productive burst of offense in the third period when they scored five, the most they scored in any other quarter, but that was negated by an 11-point Richard Winn third.

Another stellar defensive performance by the Lady Eagles’ followed suit in the fourth, when Cambridge again would only score one bucket. The win leaves the Lady Eagles sitting on a winning record at 6-5.

“It’s a big confidence builder,” Stidham said. “We can utilize all of the players on our team, and everybody gets playing time, everybody can do things that you know show their strength, and it’s just a big, big confidence builder.”
