James D. Mercer

WINNSBORO – Ret. Army Colonel James “Jim” D. Mercer, 95, passed away January 18, 2017. Jim served 28 years in the Army, was a veteran of World War II and Korea, and completed his career with 20 years at the Pentagon.

The son of John Riley and Texas Edenfield Mercer, Jim was born in Metter GA on November 8, 1921. He graduated from Mt Zion Institute in Winnsboro, SC and later majored in Military Science at the University of Maryland.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Lib” Plank Mercer. He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Mercer of Alexandria, VA; his sister Anna Mercer Pullen and her husband Oscar of Hartsville, SC; his brother William T. Mercer of Hollywood, FL, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Fort Myer Old Post Chapel on June 27, 2017, followed by burial at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
