Westwood senior receives Emerging Public Leaders award

GREENVILLE – Duncan Winburn, senior at Westwood High School, received the second place, $300 award from The Richard W. Riley Institute at Furman University to build on “Star Day,” a program he created that celebrates special education students and the arts.

At the event, which drew 100 participants, art students taught special education students how to dance, sing, sculpt, improvise and make and perform puppetry.

While Star Day took months of planning and logistics, Winburn said, “Seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces, especially the students in special ed, made all the effort worth it.”

Winburn initiated the event while participating in The Richard W. Riley Institute’s Emerging Public Leaders program, a week-long summer program designed to impart public leadership skills to high school seniors. Star Day was voted to become an annual event at Westwood.
