Blythewood blows by Beaufort

BLYTHEWOOD – The Bengals were looking for their third consecutive win Friday night when they hosted the 3-1 Beaufort Eagles. The Blythewood offense and defense were clicking on all cylinders, and Brandon Edwards left quite the impact on the Eagles. Edwards netted 182 yards on six carries and had three touchdowns in Blythewood’s 42-6 blowout.

More than half of the time had drained out of the first quarter before the first scoring play. A 48-yard pass from King Ford to Kevon Catoe opened the Beaufort defense enough for Brandon Edwards to score a 16-yard touchdown on the next play.

The Blythewood defense squashed the Eagles’ following drive, and got possession back with less than two minutes to go in the first quarter. After receiving the punt at their own 41-yard line, it took Brandon Edwards just one play to rip a 59-yard score.

Beaufort opened the second quarter with a promising possession. They moved down inside of Blythewood territory, but a Nic Rogers sack on third-and-eight ended their momentum. The following Eagle punt was a bad one, and Blythewood took over at the Beaufort 35-yard line.

The Bengals opened the next drive with a couple of short plays, but on the fifth play of the drive, Ford dialed up Catoe for a 23-yard touchdown. Ford’s first passing touchdown of the game put the Bengals in the driver’s seat with a 21-0 lead.

After another stalled drive, the Eagles were forced to punt back to the hot Bengal offense. The punt was another short one, and for the second straight possession the Bengals took over in Beaufort territory.

Ford started off the next drive with a 19-yard pass to Joshua Burrell. Later in the drive a Beaufort personal foul call pushed the Bengals inside the red-zone. Jaylon Boyd powered his way to an 11-yard touchdown on the next play. That was the Bengals fourth consecutive scoring drive and their last before halftime.

Beaufort opened the second half with an 11-play, 74-yard drive, but it stalled in the red-zone. Collin Williams broke up the Eagles’ pass on a fourth-down attempt from the Blythewood six-yard line.

Edwards struck 17 seconds later. He received the first handoff on the next drive and plowed through the Eagles’ defense for a 94-yard score. The long touchdown put the Bengals up 35-0. The Eagles answered back with an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive. Jeffrey Smyth finished the drive with a 12-yard pass to Reed Reichel.

Chase Atkinson fielded the Eagle kickoff after their long scoring drive and took the kickoff return 77 yards before he was knocked out of bounds at the opposing eight-yard line. Boyd finished the drive on the next play with his second touchdown of the game and the final score of the night.

The Bengals have next week off before a meeting with Irmo on Oct.5.
