NEWBERRY – The Lady Eagles picked up a big win on Tuesday night when they took on the Newberry Academy Eagles. The 3-1 win put Richard Winn third in region standings, setting them up for a matchup with No. 6 Anderson Christian on Saturday at the Region Tournament at Laurens Academy.

Sydney Boulware sends a scorching return in Tuesday’s Cambridge match.

The Lady Eagles took set one 25-18 and set two 25-17. Newberry mounted a comeback in set three, and took the 25-17 win, but Richard Winn muffed the Newberry flame in set four with a tight 25-23 victory.

The win comes on the heels of a three-straight set victory in Monday’s match at King Academy. The Lady Eagles won 25-19, 25-17 and 25-18 in the region matchup.

Last week the Lady Eagles honored seniors Caleigh Caldwell and Gracie Atkerson following a match with region foe Cambridge Academy. Richard Winn took set one 25-23 and set three 26-24, but Cambridge edged the Eagles in the 5 set match. The Cougars won a tight 26-24 second set and squeaked past the Eagles in set four 25-22 and set five 15-12.

Richard Winn and Cambridge will likely have a rematch in Saturday’s tournament as the winner of the Richard Winn/Anderson Christian game will face second ranked Cambridge.

The Lady Eagles hope that a strong tournament weekend will propel them into the SCISA A State Playoffs, which begin Oct. 19.
