NEWBERRY – Nick Chaisson and the Richard Winn Eagles took to Newberry on Friday to meet their familiar foe, the Newberry Academy Eagles. Richard Winn brought a 47-34 victory back to Winnsboro.
RWA got off to blazing start. The duo of Hudson Wade and Darius Boyd scored all of the Eagles’ 15 first-quarter points. Newberry Academy had their strongest surge in the fourth quarter, but were still outplayed by the dynamic RWA offense, and was not able to erase the double digit deficit.
Boyd finished with 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block. Wade and John Russell each pulled 8 rebounds and a steal. Wade also had 3 blocks and a deflection. Dru Caldwell finished with 9 points, 3 assists and 2 steals. Will Carvalho managed 8 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.
The Lady Eagles did not fare as well as their counterparts against Newberry Academy. Hannah Gibbons went off on Newberry for 20 points and knocked down a pair of three-pointers, but the team was not able to overcome the stifling Newberry defensive performance in the first half. Newberry held RWA to 12 points in the first half, and had a double-digit lead at halftime. RWA made a strong charge in the second half but it was not enough, and they fell 48-42.
Millie Lambert and her Lady Eagles rebounded on Tuesday night in their region match-up against the Cambridge Academy Cougars. Taylor Spires had 24 points and the Eagles’ defense shined bright in the 44-28 rout.
