Blythewood levels Beaufort

BEAUFORT – Ready to shake off last week’s overwhelming loss to 3-time state champion Dutch Fork, Blythewood hit the road to the Lowcountry Friday night and went straight to work with Beaufort.

The Bengals (4-2) scored on their first eight possessions of the game and walloped the Eagles 56-14 at Beaufort Stadium.

Josh Burrell and Brandon Edwards had three touchdowns apiece. Edwards rushed for 67 yards and two touchdowns and caught a third. Burrell had four catches for 164 yards, including TD receptions of 79, 73, and 3 yards.

Burrell’s catches inflated the statistics for quarterback Josh Strickland, who completed 17 of 20 passes for 344 yards and five touchdowns.

The Bengals rolled up 531 yards of total offense on 50 plays. Beaufort (0-4) had 478 total yards on 74 plays, but Blythewood’s efficiency and the Eagles’ two lost fumbles enabled the Bengals to keep the momentum.

Blythewood’s first three scores came off of 11 offensive plays from scrimmage.

Edwards opened the scoring with an 8-yard TD run that Strickland and Burrell followed up on with a 79-yard touchdown strike. With the Bengals up 14-0, Strickland found Dhani Dixon from 10 yards out at the 1:34 mark of the first to go up 21-0.

Beaufort got scores on James Dagin and Tyler Haley touchdown runs in the second quarter, but Blythewood got three more scores on two 4-yard Edwards runs and a 73-yard TD connection from Burrell and Strickland to lead 42-14 at halftime.

Burrell’s 3-yard reception came late in the third quarter, and King Ford ran in from one yard out early in the fourth to give the Bengals a 56-14 lead.

Haley found Rhogue Wallace in the end zone from 18 yards out to close out the scoring.

Blythewood is off Friday and will open Region 4-5A play at Irmo Oct. 11.
