Bengals ink collegiate commitments

BLYTHEWOOD — Blythewood High School recognized eight members of the Class of 2020 as they announced their plans to continue their careers on the collegiate level during the early signing period.

Lauryn Coleman, daughter of Marcus and Angel Coleman, announced her signing with the Bethune- Cookman University to continue her volleyball career on the collegiate level. Coleman, an outside hitter for head coach Mary Hall at Blythewood, earned All-State and All-Region honors this year. She was one of 11 athletes in South Carolina named to the Under Armour AVCA Region Team. Coleman helped lead the Bengals to the 12th region championship in program history.

Colleen Finney, daughter of Jerry and Elaine Finney, announced her signing to continue her volley- ball career at Clemson University. Finney, an outside hitter for head coach Mary Hall, was one of 11 athletes in South Carolina selected to the Under Armour AVCA Region Team. Additionally, she selected as an Under Armour All-American Honorable Mention, the first such recognition in school history.

For the second-straight year, Finney was selected to the All-State team, the All-Region team, and the Region Player of the Year. Finney was selected to represent Blythewood at the North-South All-Star Game.

Lindsey Hoile, daughter of Brian and MaryPaul Hoile, announced her intention to continue her golf career at Columbia College. Hoile was a valuable member of the Blythewood golf team for head coach Jason Minkel. Hoile helped lead the Bengals to the 2019 5A State Championship, the first in program history. She earned six varsity letters over her career and was selected as an All-Region golfer five times. Hoile finished in the top 15 at the State Championship tournament each of the last two years. Hoile represented Blythewood at the North-South All-Star Golf Challenge.

Landon Lucas, son of Rick and Amy Lucas, signed a scholarship to continue his baseball career at Clemson University. Lucas, a pitcher and infielder for head coach Banks Faulkner, helped lead the Bengals to the 2019 State Championship series. Lucas was selected as an All-Region and All-State player each of the last two seasons. He was also selected as an Honorable Mention All-American by Perfect Game. Lucas was selected as the Tournament Most Valuable Player for the 2018 South Carolina Diamond Invitational.

Ariana Paez, daughter of Christian and Angie Paez, announced her intention to continue her soccer career at Newberry College. Paez, a backfielder for head coach Kathy Knight at Blythewood, was selected as the team’s Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and the team’s Most Valuable Player as a junior. She was selected as the 2017-2018 Woman of the Year by South Carolina United FC.

Elizabeth Schossler, daughter of Tammie Schossler, signed to continue her soccer career at Newberry College. Schossler plays both defense and attacking midfield for head coach Kathy Knight at Blythewood. Schossler came to Blythewood after beginning her scholastic career at Ben Lippen. Schossler earned a varsity letter with the Bengals last season.

Brookelynn Thomas, daughter of Carmen Thomas, Theron Barron, and Damon and Stacy Young, signed a scholarship to continue her volleyball career at Winthrop University. A right-side and middle hitter for head coach Mary Hall, earned All-Region and All-State honors at Blythewood this past sea- son. Thomas also earned All-Region honors after her junior season. Thomas has been a USA Volleyball A1 selection was a three-year invitee to the Carolina Rouge Volleyball Club.

Claudia Watson, daughter of Rob and Tammy Watson, signed a scholarship offer to continue her soccer career at Anderson University. Watson, a forward for head coach Kathy Knight at Blythewood, has been selected as a team captain for her upcoming senior season. She was named the Attacking Player of the Year for the team in 2019, scoring 29 goals for the Lady Bengals as a junior.
