Redhawks, Bengals compete at State

CAMDEN – Westwood Cross Country enthusiasts were hopeful for a big run from Emma Ashley at the South Carolina 4A State Championship meet on Tuesday, and they were not disappointed.

Though Westwood Girls did not qualify to compete as a team, Ashley, a seventh grader, finished in twelfth place overall with a time of 19:21.68. Ashley earned All-State honors with her top-15 finish. Westwood runner Leayzia Shiver finished at 23:37.03.

The Westwood Boys team finished in 16th place. David Nelson topped Redhawk runners in 51st place with a time of 17:31. Jordan Alexander-Coleman followed Nelson closely at 17:43.76 for a 59th place finish. William Tyndall crossed with a time of 18:03.18 fir 78th place. Bryce Strickland and Robert Johnson rounded out the Redhawk top-5 with times of 18:29.47 and 18:39.36.

Christian Pearson was the lone Bengal to compete in the 5A boys 5000 meter run finals. Pearson finished in 42nd place overall with a time of 16:42.94.
