Eagles pick up region win

WINNSBORO – The Richard Winn Lady Eagles went 1-1 on the week moving their record to 3-4, 1-0 this season. The Lady Eagles defeated Cambridge Academy by a 36-26 score last Friday in their region opener. They were then defeated by Thomas Sumter Academy on Tuesday by a 25-21 score.

Trailing 12-6 after one quarter of play, the Lady Eagles outscored Cambridge Academy by a 14-0 margin in the second quarter to take a 20-12 lead into intermission. Cambridge fought back to get within two to start the fourth quarter at 22-20. The Lady Eagles proved too much for Cambridge in the fourth, winning the quarter 14-6 and the game 36-26.

Meredith Pope (12) and Taylor Spires (10) were the only Lady Eagles who reached double figures as they combined for 22 of the teams 36 points. Pope drained a pair of three-point baskets while both Pope and Spires finished 4-6 from the charity stripe.

Thomas Sumter led the Eagles by a 12-6 margin at the half. Richard Winn won the second half by a 15-13 score, but came up a few points short of completing the rally.

Pope was the lone scorer for Richard Winn to reach double figures as she finished with 10. She made two three-point baskets while Spires also made two three pointers to give her six in the game.

Richard Winn is back in action on Dec. 16 at Wardlaw Academy.
