George Alexander celebrates 100

George Alexander

LAKE WATEREE – A 100th birthday celebration parade in honor of World War II veteran George Alexander will be hosted by his family on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.

To join the parade, line up Boat Club Road, then turn left onto Shangri-La Drive and drive past George’s house. Attendees are asked to stay in their vehicles to maintain social distancing. A drop-off box will be available for birthday cards.

A veteran of three wars – World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War – Alexander enlisted in the United States Marine Corp at the age of 19 and is among an elite few of World War II surviving veterans of that war.

Alexander was honored by county council on Monday evening with a proclamation that read, in part:

“Through learning the value of hard work by working alongside your grandfather to plow fields, work in cotton mills and serving in the armed forces, you have selflessly served your community, your state and your country …We wish to express our admiration and respect for you and your life and do hereby honor you as an esteemed example of citizenship and service at its best.”

The proclamation noted Alexander’s example of being a Godly person, devoted to many hours of prayer and reading scripture. A member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Mitford, Alexander was married for 63 years and has four children, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
