Promise Program eligibility expanded

WINNSBORO – Council members voted unanimously to amend its memorandum of understanding relating to the Promise Program, extending eligibility from 12 months to 36 months after graduation.

County Administrator Jason Taylor said the program, which aims to provide a college education free of cost to qualifying Fairfield County students, is suffering from poor participation.

“Right now we don’t have enough people taking advantage of the Promise Program,” Taylor said. “We want people to take advantage of the Promise Program.”

Councilman Neil Robinson said he supported the extension. He said his daughter, who’s participating in the Promise Program, noted that many students face financial struggles out of high school and wind up dropping out.

“I think extending it is a good thing,” Robinson said.

Taylor said the county has spent about $60,000 on the program in the past two years.
