Richland 2, Fairfield County support responsible gun ownership

COLUMBIA  – Richland Two and Fairfield County School Districts along with several surrounding school districts signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Be SMART Program this week.

The MOU will encourage responsible gun ownership and safety. Local law enforcement, Prisma Health and Medical University of South Carolina Health-Columbia are also supporting the MOU.

Be SMART is an acronym which stands for:

S- Secure all guns in your home and vehicles,

M- Model responsible behavior around guns,

A- Ask about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes your children visit,

R- Recognize the role of guns in suicide,

T- Tell your peers to be SMART.

The Be SMART program, developed by Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, helps parents and other adults normalize conversations about gun safety and take responsible actions that can prevent child gun deaths and injuries.

Superintendents (or their designees) from Richland Two, Fairfield, Calhoun, Lexington 3, Lexington 4, Orangeburg, Richland One, and Sumter School Districts are participating.

The meeting was held at the Richland Two Institute for INnovaton (R212) Conference Center in Columbia.

  1. Terrence M Cummings says

Thank you to Richland School District Two and Fairfield County School Districts for supporting SMART.

At the anniversary of the mass shooting on December 14, 2012 of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where 20 lives of children and six adults were slaughtered, this is a timely and important MOU as our legislators have failed to act responsibly to prevent child gun deaths and injuries.

Let’s increase the support of SMART!

  2. Peter T. Miller SSG (Ret.) says

This memorandum has absolutely nothing to do with child safety. Everytown for gun safety is an anti-second amendment, anti-firearms organization which funnels Bloomberg’s millions into public office and districts in order to buy their allegiance. How much bribe money did this district obtain I wonder? This pathetic excuse for a school board is evidently taking money in an effort to use our children as little spies for this organization. They are not concerned with child safety. They are concerned with ascertaining the location of firearms! Paired with the garbage pseudo-psychological agenda of Social-Emotional learning (SEL), this is extremely dangerous to our Constitutional rights. SEL makes use of “surveys” to collect data on both from and about our children. They do so without parental consent! The public school system is attempting to cut parents out of their children’s lives and make them little tools of the state! Parents it is time to get loud at school board meetings and begin pulling our children from this woke train wreck of a school district before our strips away even more of our fundamental liberties.

  3. I am greatly concerned about the Be SMART coalition. Be SMART is closely associated with Michael Blooberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety (and source often of erroneous and biased “facts”) and MOMs Demand Action. I fear it is actually an anti-gun program, not an anti gun-violence program. I find nothing in it to address the causes of gun violence.
I offered my participation as a community member to Richland 2. What was the superintendent’s recommendation? Join Be SMART.
    Seriously?
