WINNSBORO – The Fairfield Central boys picked up two region wins over Mid-Carolina on Friday and Monday with 53-43 and 56-42 finals.
After falling to Chester 45-52 on Tuesday, the Griffins were hungry for a win as they entered Prosperity. Up 11-8 after a quarter, the Rebels closed the gap by halftime as Fairfield Central held a 23-22 lead.
The Griffins held firm in the second half, winning the third quarter 14-10 and the fourth 16-11 for a 10-point final win.
When Fairfield hosted the Rebels on Monday for a rematch, Mid-Carolina came out the gates swinging. Down 26-19 at halftime, the Griffins had to dig deep to pull out a win. They outscored the Rebels 13-6 in the third and 24-10 in the fourth for a 56-42 final and their second region win of the season.
After falling to Keenan in back-to-back games, the Griffin girls continued to power their way through the region. They picked up two wins against Chester last week (57-21 and 56-18), then pulled out a tight 53-51 win over Mid-Carolina last Friday.
The Rebels trailed by only one point heading into the second quarter, but a big offensive quarter by the Griffins put them up 28-19 at halftime. Mid-Carolina returned with pressure in the second half, tying with the Griffins 16-16 in the third, but outscoring them 16-9 in the fourth. The Rebel comeback was not enough as the Griffins pulled out the two-point win in Prosperity.
De’asia Feaster and Madisen Belton had 12 points apiece in the win and freshman Jordyn Adams put up 11. Zanariah Yarborough had 9 rebounds and 5 points. Belton snagged 8 steals and Adams had six.
Monday’s rematch with Mid-Carolina was less of a thriller, but produced the same result as the Griffins took their fourth region win of the season, this time by a 57-37 margin.
Adams led scorers with 22, followed by Yarborough with 11 and Feaster with 10. Yarborough had a team-high 6 rebounds and Belton led the team with 6 steals and 3 assists.
The Griffins hosted Indian Land on Wednesday but scores were not available at press time. They will host Great Falls on Friday. Tip off for varsity girls is 8 p.m.
