Blythewood softball finishes 2nd in region, opens playoffs

BLYTHEWOOD – The Blythewood softball team (14-6) finished second in the Region 3-5A standings with a 13-3 victory over Spring Valley April 26, and closed out the regular season with a 4-1 win over A.C. Flora Friday.

The second-seeded Bengals played host to No.3 Boiling Springs Wednesday in the upper state District 2 Tournament. The Bengals, who compete with the Bulldogs, No.1 Lexington and No.4 J.L. Mann in the double-elimination tournament, will play again Friday.

Against Spring Valley, the Bengals scored six runs in the first inning and six more in the second to start off to a 12-0 lead. Josie Smythe hit a 3-run home run, I’yanna Velez hit a 2-run double, and Maya Van Zyl and Keeleyg Hughes both had two hits.

Lauren Hardy gave up four hits struck out eight in her five innings in the circle.

Against A.C. Flora, Blythewood broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh. Hardy hit a solo homer, Makalah Ford hit an RBI triple, Van Zyl and Smythe both doubled, and Ashlee Hoile had two hits.

Hardy pitched a complete-game 4-hitter, striking out seven.
