Eagles snag back-to-back wins

WINNSBORO – Richard Winn girls had their first major test of the season last Friday as they hosted defending state champion Cambridge Academy.

In just their second game of the season, the Eagles battled back from a 9-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take a 43-40 win over Cambridge.

A pair of three-pointers from Delaney Young and one from Brinson Baker put Richard Winn on top 9-8 after a quarter of play. Cambridge put up 14 in the second quarter and held the Eagles to seven to lead 22-16 at the half.

The Cougars extended their lead in the third quarter, but the Eagle offense rallied on the backs of their veteran players. The win put the team at 2-0 in region play.

“Proud of the girls’ effort,” head coach Jeff Spires said following the win. “The chemistry of this group is special. Being down 9 to start the fourth quarter and go on to win against a great team like Cambridge shows the fight and resilience of this group.”

The Eagle girls returned to the court on Monday to host their first non-conference game of the season against Holly Hill.

Richard Winn took a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and ran with it, claiming their third win with a 46-20 final.

Sophomore Abby Lewis led with 16 points. Baker had 13.

The Eagle boys moved to 4-0 on the season with their own wins over Cambridge and Holly Hill.

Drew Spires led the team with 23 points in the blow-out 78-30 win over Cambridge on Friday. Miller Stuck had 15, and Bennett Nicholson had 10.

The Eagles faced a tougher squad on Monday but still took a 21-point win over Holly Hill (55-34).

Both teams will battle Our Lady of the Rosary on Thursday in more region play.  Girls tip off at 5:30; boys will follow.
