Eagles host Mavs during Christmas tourney

WINNSBORO – Following their road-loss to Lake Pointe Academy on Dec. 20, the Eagle boys got back into the win column on Dec. 27 when they hosted cross-town foe Midlands STEM Charter School for the first game of their Christmas Tournament. 

The Eagles bested the Mavericks by a 71-54 final. Senior Charlie Bonds led the Eagles with 23 points and 13 rebounds. He also had three assists and two blocks. Bennett Nicholson, a junior, had 17 points and 6 assists. Seniors Colin Davis and Josh Tyndall had 10 points each. 

Midlands STEM, still with a program in its infancy, has yet to find a win this season. They have come close, with a 57-51 loss to Riverwalk Academy in early December. 

Richard Winn’s boys faced Thornwell in day two of the tournament and claimed a 70-48 win over the Saints. Nicholson led with 23 points, eight assists and seven rebounds; Bonds had 20 points and 18 rebounds. Junior Eli Smith had 10 rebounds and eight points. 

The Eagles’ loss to Lake Pointe on Dec. 20 ended their three-game win-streak. It was their second loss to the Mariners this season. 

The holiday tournament wins put the Eagle boys at 6-3 on the season. 

The Eagle girls defeated Midlands STEM in day one of the tournament and returned to face a tough Great Falls squad on day two. 

Great Falls led by six after the first quarter and held the Eagles to a 22-5 score at halftime. Richard Winn’s offense found more of a rhythm in the second half, but Great Falls kept distance and finished with a 47-19 win. 

The tournament comes off of an exciting 29-22 win for the Eagle girls against Lake Pointe on Dec. 20. Junior Abby Lewis led the Eagles with 11 points and eight rebounds. She had four assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Mary Margaret Swearingen, a sophomore, had eight points, six rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist. Eighth grader Charlotte Lewis had a team-high 14 rebounds and six points. Haley Autry had 11 rebounds and seven steals, a team-high. 

The win over Lake Pointe was the second in a row for the young Eagle girls squad. They defeated Our Lady of the Rosary on Dec. 17 by a 36-31 margin. 

Abby Lewis led the 10 points. She also had seven rebounds, four steals, two blocks and two assists. Autry had a team-high 10 rebounds and four blocks. She also had two steals. Charlotte Lewis had seven rebounds and six points. Harper Branham chipped in six points as well as four steals.

The Eagle girls sit at 5-4 on the season. 

Both Eagle teams return to action in region games on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at home against Wardlaw Academy.
