Four Bengals qualify for state championships

BOILING SPRINGS – After spending Friday in Boiling Springs at the Upper State Championship, four Bengal wrestlers have qualified to compete individually at the SC High School League state championship.

This is the second year that the Blythewood girls wrestling program will send four to compete.

With a more veteran squad this year – two seniors and two juniors who qualified – this year, Blythewood has a heavier hand entering the post-season.

Senior Tiyanna Mack claimed the Upper State title for the third year in a row. Currently 21-1 on the season, Mack also looks poised to claim her third straight state title. Mack wrestles in the 130lb weight class.

Abby Ely, also a senior, will return to state for the third time. Ely, who wrestles at 190lbs, finished second at Upper State on Friday. She is 26-5 on the season.

Juniors Audra Petroff and Kennedy Mitchell both earned their first opportunity to compete for a state title.

Petroff finished third at 155lbs in the Upper State match. She sits at 26-7 on the season.

Mitchell, who wrestles in the HWY class, placed fourth at Upper State this year – her rookie season. She is 13-10 on the season.

State finals for girls’ wrestling are set for Saturday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m.
