WINNSBORO – It’s a new year, and both Fairfield Central basketball teams opened the 2025 portion of their seasons with back-to-back wins.
In their first game in over two weeks, the Griffin girls took charge of their Jan. 8 game from tip-off. Up by four after the first quarter, Newberry battled back to tie the game at 21. Fairfield battled back in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 31-18 to take a 52-39 win.
The Griffins (1-0) extended their streak with a 43-29 win at Eau Claire on Tuesday. The game was their first in region action.
After a week off of games, the Griffin boys found themselves trailing by 11-9 against Newberry at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to three by halftime, but Fairfield recovered in the second half.
The Griffins put up 15 in the third quarter to tie the game at 38. The momentum shift pushed the Griffins up in the fourth to help them clinch the win with a 51-47 final.
The Griffin offense was led by junior Rashawn Brown, who put up a team-high 21 points and five assists in the win. Khaleb Feaster added 11 points and eight rebounds.
The boys followed up the win with another thriller over Eau Claire on Tuesday.
Fairfield trailed 21-15 at halftime, but the tides shifted in the third. The Griffins put up 15 points in the third and held Eau Claire to only five. Up 30-26, Fairfield held off a Shamrock comeback, outscoring them 10-9 in the fourth to take a 40-25 win.
Both Griffin teams will host Columbia tonight for more region action. Girls tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m.; the boys will follow. They’ll return to action on Jan. 21 at Mid-Carolina.
