WINNSBORO – With the opening of the 2025 portion of basketball season, Richard Winn will buckle down in region play.
The Eagle boys traveled to Cambridge on Friday, Jan. 3 and came away with a 66-53 win.
Junior Bennett Nicholson led Eagle scorers with 21 points. He also had four assists and four steals. Josh Tyndall and Charlie Bonds, both seniors, had 18 and 12 respectively. Bonds and Collin Davis, also a senior, had 15 rebounds, four assists and two steals each. Junior Eli Smith added 14 rebounds.
The Eagles followed up their region win with another on Tuesday, this a 68-55 win in Winnsboro against Wardlaw Academy.
The wins move the Eagle boys to 8-3 on the season, 4-0 in region play.
They will face Laurens Academy on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 5:30 p.m., then host Cambridge on Jan. 14 and Anderson Christian on Jan. 15 for more region play.
With no girls team to play at Cambridge, the Eagle girls opened the 2025 portion of their season on Tuesday against Wardlaw.
The Patriots went up 17-5 after a quarter of play, but the Eagles fought back to cut the lead to six late in the third quarter.
Clock management into effect in the fourth, Richard Winn was forced to foul, giving the Patriots some free throw cushion to pad the win as they downed the Eagles 45-30. Richard Winn was only 8-18 in free throws.
Junior Abby Lewis led the young Eagle squad with 12 points and five rebounds. She also chipped in four steals, three assists and a block. Haley Autry, a sophomore, had a team-high 11 rebounds.
Now 5-5 on the season, the Eagles look to pick up a win against King on Friday.
The Eagle girls will host Whitmire on Jan. 13 and Our Lady of the Rosary on Jan. 15. Both games have 6 p.m. tip offs.
