Eagles close season just short of title

SUMTER – In their first season under seasoned head coach Joe Pitt, the young Richard Winn girls’ basketball squad reached the semi-final round of the SCISA playoffs.

The Eagles faced familiar foe Wardlaw Academy, a one-seed, in their second round game. It was their fourth meeting of the season, but not one that produced different results as the Eagles surrendered a 33-22 loss to the Patriots.

The Eagles snatched a first round win out from under Mead Hall Episcopal School on Feb. 14.

The Eagles stormed out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter, and extended it to 30-8 by halftime.

The Panthers had their biggest offensive output in the third quarter – eight points – as the Eagles went on to claim the 56-21 win.

Haley Autry led the Eagles with 17 points. Eighth grader Charlotte Lewis had 14 points, eight rebounds, and a pair of steals. Abby Lewis, who chipped in eight points, had a team-high nine rebounds, seven steals and four assists.

The Eagles close out the season with an 11-8 record.

Wardlaw advances to face Curtis Baptist in the title bout on Saturday.
