JOHNSTON – Fairfield Central’s girls’ basketball team stormed into the South Carolina High School League’s 2A state championship bracket with a vengeance.
On the heels of a 39-18 region loss at Clinton High School last week to close out the regular season, Fairfield’s girls earned a three seed in the 2A playoffs. Pitted against second-seeded Strom Thurmond High School, the Griffins headed to Johnston for game one.
The Griffins took charge of the game early on – holding a 10-point lead after a quarter of play. The Rebels charged back in the second quarter to close the lead to 24-17 at halftime.
The second quarter was the only one that saw double-digit scoring from the Rebels. Fairfield held them to just two points in the third and nine in the fourth as they took the 37-28 round one win, eliminating Strom Thurmond from playoff contention.
Fairfield Central (10-11) advances to round two, where they’ll face off with second-seeded Cheraw, who took down Chesnee 60-42 in the first round. Tip off for the game is set for 7 p.m. tonight.
