Richard Winn finds playoff revenge against Newberry

COLUMBIA – Following their one-point Region Tournament Championship loss to Newberry Academy on Feb. 8, Richard Winn’s boys got back into the win column against none other than Newberry Academy.

A two-seed, the Eagles received a first-round bye. Newberry dropped St. Elizabeth Ann Setton 65-13 in the first round to face the Eagles in the second round. It was their fourth time meeting this season.

In their first two meetings, the Eagles downed Newberry 36-31 and 37-25.

Richard Winn claimed more control of the game this time – holding Newberry to only 19 points in the low-scoring contest. They claimed a 33-19 win to advance to the semi-final round.

The Eagles will face off with top-seeded Curtis Baptist today at Wilson Hall in Sumter – winner advances to the title game on Saturday against the winner of Ragin Prep and Malboro.

Curtis Baptist has a 14-9 record on the season. The Eagles now sit at 17-4.

Tip-off for today’s game is set for 4:30.
