GREENWOOD – With a 10-0 region record during the regular season, Richard Winn’s boys’ claimed another basketball region title.

They wrapped the regular season on Jan. 31 with a 45-38 win over King Academy, then entered the SCSISA 1A Region 3 tournament last week as the top-seed.

The Eagles downed Anderson Christian 52-44 in their first game, but lost to Newberry Academy in a tight 35-34 game to fall just short of a region tournament championship. The loss to Newberry ended their 12-game win streak.

Senior Colin Davis led the Eagle offense with 31 points in the two-game tournament stretch. Charlie Bonds put up 13 points against King but was held to just five against Newberry in the title game.

Following the tournament title game on Saturday, Davis and Bonds were named to the All-Tournament team. Davis and Bennett Nicholson, who missed tournament play with an injury, were All-Region selections. Bonds was named Region Player of the Year.

The Eagles now turn to the SCISA playoffs, which begin on Friday and will wrap Feb. 21-22 in Sumter.

Receiving a first round bye, the boys will see their first action on in the second round against the winner of Newberry Academy and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
