Bengals wins Nike Palmetto Cup

Blythewood went 2-0-1 in the Nike Palmetto Cup tournament at Saluda Shoals Park during Spring Break.

COLUMBIA – Blythewood’s boys soccer team claimed the Nike Palmetto Cup last week with a 9-0 defeat of Woodland.

Magnus Thorpe and Christian Paez had two goals each. Jose Paez, Ashton Davis, Shane Bates, John Lenker and Ryan Hall scored one apiece. Christian Paez, Thorpe, Cole Brunecz, Graham Ballard, Joshua Lewis, Daulton Purcell, Paxton Brunetto and Jose Paez had assists. Tyler Skiff had two saves on goal in the shut out win.

The Bengals opened tournament play on Monday with Legion Collegiate Academy. They advanced to the title game after a 3-0 win over Ben Lippen on Tuesday. Purcell had two goals; Ryan Hall scored one. Christian Paez and Aboagye Agyenum-Boateng had an assist each. Skiff had three saves.

The Bengals returned to the regular season on Tuesday with a 2-1 (two-overtime) win over Swansea. Down 1-0 at halftime, the Bengals tied up the score to send the non-region game into overtime. Purcell and Ryan Hall had the team’s two goals.

Blythewood (15-3-1), currently first in the region, will close the regular season with three region games.  They will travel to Ridge View tonight for a 7:15 game. They are on the road at West Florence on Tuesday, then will wrap the regular season at home against Sumter on May 2.
