Douglass Geddings Macfie, affectionately known as “Doug and Gran” of Camden, passed away on April 29, 2025. Born in Winnsboro, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Loring Geddings and Elizabeth Irene Ragsdale Geddings.
Doug received her degrees in business and library science from Columbia College and the University of South Carolina. She was a Sunday school teacher at Bethesda Presbyterian Church where she was an active member for over 50 years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority.
Doug was a devoted woman of faith. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was an intellectual who had a passion for books and reading. Doug taught English and then became a librarian for over 20 years at Pine Tree Hill Elementary and Camden High School. She was a kind, mannerly, woman who cherished her family and friends and they all adored her. Her husband, Jim Macfie, was the love of her life and she the love of his. Their affectionate ways and genuine respect for and devotion to each other gave everyone who knew them an awesome example of a loving marriage.
She is survived by her son, James P. Macfie, Jr. (Hope); daughter, Elizabeth Macfie Butler (Rob); and four grandchildren, Evan Macfie (Andrea), Nicholas Butler, Hannah Macfie, and Christopher Butler (Anna Katherine).
In addition to her parents, Doug is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, James Pringle Macfie, Sr.
Funeral services, conducted by Reverend Brent Kendall, will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, May 12th at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, 502 DeKalb Street in Camden. The family will receive friends after the service in Westminster Hall of the church. Family burial will follow at 4:30 in the afternoon at the Old Brick Church Cemetery, Highway 213 S. Jenkinsville, SC 29065.
