RIDGEWAY – Former Ridgeway Mayor Pro Tem Don Prioleau was recognized last week for his service to his community and county and to his fellow man over his lifetime. Ecumenical University honored Prioleau by conferring upon him the Doctor of Humanities.

In honoring Prioleau, it was noted that he has been a devoted public servant, a visionary, civic leader, and tireless community advocate whose legacy of service has helped shape the cultural and civic identity in Ridgeway and beyond.
Over the span of more than 45 years, Prioleau has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to justice, youth empowerment, historical preservation, and inclusive leadership.
Prioleau was the first African American to hold elected office in Ridgeway when he was elected to serve on Ridgeway’s town council. He addressed community health needs by helping to attract the Ridgeway Family Practice medical center to Ridgeway.
He was a founding member of Ridgeway’s Pig on the Ridge barbecue festival, serving many years on its steering committee.
Prioleau is a lifelong member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church where he served many years as an Elder and as president of the Men’s Council. He also served as Boy Scout Master of Troop 173 where he shaped the lives of generations of boys.
He served many years and still serves as president of the Fairfield High School Alumni Association as he led the efforts to restore the school building. Through tireless fundraising and advocacy, he helped transform the school into a historical museum, and now educates the public and honors the legacy of black educators and students across generations.
Among his many accolades, Mr. Prioleau was awarded the Citizen of the Year by the Town of Ridgeway, received the Rollins Edwards Living Legacy Award in 2023, and in 2024, was honored with the naming of a South Carolina state road in his name.
Prioleau is a 33rd degree Mason, and holds leadership roles in Masonic and Shriner organizations and is widely respected for his spiritual and civic influence.
As the Doctor of Humanities was conferred on him, Prioleau was called a man of faith, vision, and generational impact.
