BLYTHEWOOD – The Blythewood boys and girls swim team took region titles at the Region 5-5A swim meet Friday at the Jeep Rogers YMCA.
The girls team won with a total of 347 points, with Spring Valley coming in second with 246 points, Lugoff-Elgin taking third with 178 points, West Florence placing fourth with 100 points, Westwood taking fifth with 22 points and Sumter coming in sixth with 20 points.
The boys team took first with 298 points, eclipsing Spring Valley’s 284 points. Lugoff-Elgin placed third with 171 points, West Florence took fourth with 116 points, Sumter placed fifth with 73 points and Westwood took sixth place with two points.
The South Carolina High School League state swimming championships kick off today through Saturday at the Sol Blatt Natatorium at the University of South Carolina. The 5A Division 1 boys begin at 6 p.m. today, and the 5A Division 1 girls championships begin at 2 p.m. Friday.
The girls 200-yard medley relay A-team of Scarlette Hankwitz, Catherine Maradei, Abby Christian, and Addison Maradei took first with a time of 1:58.03. The B-team of Lilly Kang, Ava Sanders, Nora Kang, and Anya Hutchinson took second.
The Bengals also won the 200 freestyle relay, with the girls A-team of Christian, Addison Maradei, Catherine Maradei, and Gracie Thames finishing with a time of 1:47.12. The B-Team of Lily Kang, Breana Cabrera, Lauren Benson, and Eleanor Sanders took third.
In the 400 freestyle relay, the girls A-team of Nora Kang, Hutchinson, Hankwitz, and Thames finished second with a time of 4:15.63, which was behind Spring Valley’s first place time of 3:59.12.
In individual girls events, Christian won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.50 and took second in the 200 intermediate medley.
Catherine Maradei took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:39.72 and second in the 100 breaststroke.
Thames took second in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 breaststroke
Hankwitz took second in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 200 freestyle.
Addison Maradei took second in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the 100 freestyle.
Lily Kang took fourth in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 100 backstroke.
Nora Kang took fourth in the 200 intermediate medley and fifth in the 100 butterfly.
Eleanor Sanders took fifth in the 200 medley and sixth in the 100 freestyle.
Hutchinson took fourth in the 50 freestyle and fifth in the 100 freestyle.
Lauren Benson took seventh in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Breana Cabrera took fourth in the 100 butterfly, Sophia Gammons finished fifth in the 500 freestyle, Emily Pickens took seventh in the 200 freestyle, Ava Sanders took eighth in the 50 freestyle, and Saskia Hankwitz took eighth in the 100 backstroke.
The boys 200 medley relay A-team of Logan Whitney, Peyton Russel, Andres Cubero and Dylan Thompson took first with a time of 1:44.62. The B-team of Carter Peterson, Nathan Whitney, Mason Litton and Tanner Toogood took fourth.
The boys 200 freestyle A-team of Logan Whitney, Thompson, Russel, and Cubero took second with a time of 1:35.06, behind Spring Valley’s first place team that finished in 1:34.03. The B-team of Corbin Cassidy, Logan Mechling, Landon Spencer, and Kelly Wideman took sixth.
The boys A-team of Litton, Peterson, Toogood, and Nathan Whitney took second in the 400 freestyle relay, behind first-place Spring Valley’s 3:25.19 time. The B-team of Mechling, Wideman, Spencer, and Cole Wesson took fourth.
In individual boys events, Cubero won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.38 and took second in the 200 intermediate medley.
Logan Whitney won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.50 and took second in the 50 freestyle.
Thompson took second in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 200 freestyle.
Nathan Whitney took third in the 100 freestyle and seventh in the 200 freestyle.
Wesson took fifth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 200 intermediate medley.
Russel took second in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 50 freestyle.
Mechling took seventh in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Litton took third in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 50 freestyle.
Peterson took fourth in the 500 freestyle and fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Spencer took fifth in the 500 freestyle, Toogood took sixth in the 100 butterfly,
Wideman took seventh in the 500 freestyle, and Cassidy took seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
Westwood top finishers were the boys 200 freestyle team of Dillon Martin, Jeston McMoore, Myles Tyrell, and Christopher Ruff, which finished 11th.
Maliha Mpofu-Weaver took third in the girls 200 intermediate medley and third in the 100 backstroke.
Jayla Guess placed 10th in the girls 100 backstroke and 13th in the 100 freestyle.
