NEWBERRY – Richard Winn’s cross country runners returned to school Monday morning with some new hardware. Claiming the top three finish spots in the girls’ race in the Region Championship meet at Newberry on Saturday, the Eagle team claimed the Region title; the boys finished in third place.
Richard Winn’s girls dominated the top positions among their 11 total competitors. Hayden Branham led the field, finishing first with a time of 21:58.03. She was followed by Ada Bass in second place at 23:27.63. Lillian Trapp took third place at 24:21.76.
Completing the Richard Winn contingent were Addison Trapp, who finished in ninth place at 30:44.59, and Meghan Guzzi, who finished 11th at 36:03.02.
Richard Winn was the only girls’ team to field the minimum five runners required for a team score, posting 15 points. Newberry Academy and Wardlaw Academy each had three runners in the event.
The Eagle boys finished third overall with a score of 46 points behind Newberry Academy’s 30 points and Wardlaw Academy’s 44 points.
Euan Fleischer was the first finisher for the Eagle boys. With a time of 20:56.33, Fleischer secured third place out of 25 runners. Newberry Academy runners Lance Crider and Michael Vinci took first and second places at 19:32.35 and 20:54.46.
Other Richard Winn runners included Michael Sanders (23:19.70), Flynn Berry (24:02.29), Liam Fleischer (24:05.93), and Danny Caldwell (24:17.27).
Up next, the Eagles prep for the SCISA 1A State Championship meet, set for Nov. 1.
