CHESTER – It was a battle for region standings in the Fairfield Central/Chester 321-rivalry last week, but it turned into a series of unfortunate events for the Griffins as Chester claimed the 29-16 win.
Fairfield Central’s first touchdown of the night was called back due to a penalty, then Chester induced a fumble on its own 12 yard line. The Cyclones traveled 88 yards in eight plays to convert with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Forcing the Griffins to punt on their next possession, Chester’s Caleb Feaster ran in a Cyclone score from 78 yards out to put Chester up 15-0 with just over a minute to play in the first.
Chester’s defense came up with another big stop with just under 10 minutes to go in the second – an interception in the end zone – but the Cyclone offense was unable to convert.
Fairfield’s Kamauri Jones connected with Are’nyveion Reid for a 15 yard score on the back line of the end zone with just over a minute remaining in the half. The Griffins converted two to trail 15-8 at halftime.
The third quarter was all Chester. The Cyclones scored two more to go up 29-8 to all but wrap up the game. Time trickled down as Kamauri Jones ran in a Griffin touchdown from three yards out with just a minute remaining in the game as Chester took the 29-16 win.
On Friday, the Griffins (5-3, 1-1 in Region 3-2A) travel to Eau Claire (4-3, 0-1), which lost 41-8 at Chester (5-3, 2-0) Oct. 3 and was idle last week.
