WINNSBORO – Following a 3-0 loss to SCISA A Region III leader Cambridge Academy on Oct. 2, Richard Winn’s volleyball team claimed a 3-1 win on the road at Wardlaw to cement itself in second place in the region.
Stepping away from region play, the Eagles split games with SCISA A Region II opponent Jefferson Davis Academy.
The Eagles traveled to Blacksburg on Oct. 8 for their first meeting of a two-match series.
Jefferson Davis took the first game 25-22, but Richard Winn rallied behind serves of Mary Margaret Swearingen, Abby Lewis, and Catherine Blair Spires for a 25-12 win in game two. The Eagles easily took a 25-9 win in game three.
Jefferson Davis claimed game four 25-21 to send the match into a deciding fifth game. Momentum in their favor, the Raiders claimed the match with a 15-8 win in game five.
Back on their home court on Monday, the Eagles battled again in five games, but this time they claimed the 3-2 win over Jefferson Davis.
Lewis and Spires served for 16 of the Eagles’ 25 points in game one for a 25-20 win. Swearingen served eight points in a row in game two as the Eagles won 25-18.
The Raiders took the next two games with 25-16 and 25-15 finals, but the Eagles rallied in game five to win 15-8.
Richard Winn (8-5) will travel to Anderson Christian (0-8) tonight for their final match of the regular season, then await playoff seeding.
The SCISA state tournament is set for Oct. 24-25.
