Fairfield tops Capitals

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Fairfield County Breast Cancer survivors were recognized at halftime of Friday’s football game.

WINNSBORO – Fairfield Central blanked Columbia 44-0 at E.K. McLendon Stadium last week.

Junior Kamauri Jones completed two of five passes. Ty’quarius Shannon had two catches for 53 yards. Kenyal Douglas had three carries for 49 yards. Derek Cammon also tallied 49 yards in six carries. Kaden Digs had three runs for 34 yards.

While the Griffins put up only 159 rushing yards and 61 receiving yards, the defense came up with big stops to keep the Capitals out of the end zone.

The Griffins held Columbia to 199 yards of total offense in the shutout. The win put Fairfield at 3-1 in region play, tied atop the leaderboard with Chester (3-1) and Mid-Carolina (3-1). Fairfield downed Mid-Carolina 41-7 in early October. Chester beat Fairfield 29-16, and Mid-Carolina beat Chester 38-35.

Fairfield (7-3, 3-1) earned a No. 2 seed in the SCHSL Class 2A playoffs, set to begin Friday, Nov. 7. Chester is seeded first, and Mid-Carolina is a three-seed. The Griffins will play host to No. 3 Chesnee (5-5, 2-2) Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Eagles scored 42 points in the second quarter against Landrum Friday night en route to a 70-18 win. Evan Reece-Lawter had 152 yards and three touchdowns for Chesnee on the night.

The winner of Fairfield/Chesnee will advance to face the winner of Ninety-Six/Andrew Jackson on Nov. 14.
