WINNSBORO — The holiday season has arrived, and Pine Tree Playhouse is shaking up tradition with a fresh take on a timeless tale with its annual Christmas production. “Emmalina Scrooge,” by Steph Deferie, promises a modern twist for audiences who might be tired of the same old holiday shows.
In a creative departure from the standard Dickens narrative, it takes a visit from Charles Dickens himself, along with two ghostly sisters, to persuade young Emmalina Scrooge, who lacks holiday spirit, to have a change of heart.
In honor of Emmalina’s newfound Christmas spirit, the cast and crew have decided to turn their art into action by helping others in the community. The theater will collect donations for Happy Wheels South Carolina, a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering toys and gifts to children confined in hospitals year-round, not just during Christmas.
Show attendees are encouraged to bring new, still-in-the-box toys to the theater, where a collection box will be available in the box office. Those interested in donating can view a specific wish list on the Happy Wheels website (happywheels.org/get-involved/wish-list/).
Performances for “Emmalina Scrooge” are scheduled to run across two weekends in December. The show opens with evening performances on Friday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., followed by a matinee on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. The run continues the following weekend with 7 p.m. shows on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 12 and 13), concluding with a final performance on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 3 p.m.
Tickets for all performances are $15.00 and are available for purchase at www.pinetreeplayhouse.com/shows.
Pine Tree Playhouse is located at 230 S. Congress St. in Winnsboro.
