BLYTHEWOOD – It was a banner week for the Blythewood High School wrestling program, as both the men’s and women’s squads went undefeated in mid-week action, culminating in a tournament championship for the Lady Bengals.
Lady Bengals Take Gold
The women’s team traveled to Greenwood on Friday, Dec. 12, for the Greenwood Ladies Round Robin and left the competition in the dust. The Lady Bengals finished first out of 13 teams, fueled by a performance that saw eight different wrestlers take first-place medals.
Eurora Daunheimer (105 lbs) and Maddie Meetze (120 lbs) secured gold in the lighter weights. The Bengals dominated the 125-pound division, with both Emma Hursey and Zoey Pyatt taking first in their respective brackets.
The middle and upper weights were equally dominant. Sinai Odukogbe (145 lbs) and Gabby Cook (155 lbs) both finished atop the podium. Kennedy Garner (190 lbs) and Kennedy Mitchell (HWY) rounded out the gold medalists for Blythewood.
Also placing for the Bengals were Kennedy Heyward (second placee, 170 lbs) and Audra Petroff (third place, 155 lbs).
Earlier in the week on Dec. 10, the girls swept a tri-match at Gilbert High School, defeating Gilbert 42-30 and taking down White Knoll 48-30.
Boys Team Sweeps Duals, Places at Silver Fox
The Bengals boys showed no signs of fatigue during a grueling triple-header on Dec. 10. Blythewood swept the night, taking down Gilbert (56-24), Dreher (44-30), and A.C. Flora (54-30) in rapid succession.
The Bengals carried that momentum into the weekend, traveling to Dutch Fork High School on Saturday, Dec. 13, for the Silver Fox Invitational. Facing stiff competition, the team secured a 7th place finish overall, highlighted by three individual wrestlers reaching the finals.
Edyan Figueroa led the charge for Blythewood, capturing 1st Place in the 144-pound weight class.
The Bengals also had two runner-up finishes. Aiden Moon took 2nd Place in the 138-pound division, and heavyweight Jeremy Galloway battled his way to a 2nd Place finish in the Heavyweight bracket.
Both teams competed on Wednesday, but scores were not available prior to The Voice’s press deadline. The boys will wrestle again this weekend at the Lugoff-Elgin Holiday Classic.
