Eagles split wins with Newberry

NEWBERRY –Richard Winn’s basketball teams split a conference road trip to Newberry Academy on Friday night.

Richard Winn’s girls held Newberry scoreless for the first quarter. The Eagles raced out to a 26-0 lead in the opening period and never looked back. By halftime, they held a 42-2 advantage. The Eagles held Newberry to single digits in each quarter, capping off a 64-9 win.

In the nightcap, the Eagle boys fell 47-37 to Newberry.

The Eagles defense combined for 20 steals on the night. Senior Bennett Nicholson and seventh-grader Grayson Young combined for 28 of the Eagles’ 37 points to stay within reach until the final minutes. Nicholson had 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Young had 11 points and 3 steals.

The Eagle boys look to bounce back as both teams travel to Laurens Academy on Thursday, Jan. 29, in a short break from region play.

The boys will continue their road stretch at Cambridge Academy on Friday, Jan. 30, before both squads return to Winnsboro to host Wardlaw Academy on Feb. 3. Both games are region contests.
