ST MATTHEWS – Their four-game win streaked snapped last week at the hands of an undefeated Andrew Jackson Academy team, but this week the Eagles got things back on track. The Eagles traveled to St. Matthews and improved their record to 5-2, with a convincing 38-14 win over the Cavaliers.
Calhoun, once an 11-man SCISA State Champion, transitioned to eight-man football prior to the beginning season due to graduation and injuries leaving them with a depleted roster. The Cavaliers jumped out to an early eight-point lead after a short touchdown run, and a successful two-point conversion.
The stingy Eagle defense did not allow another score until the third quarter, and in the meantime their offense proceeded to pile on 24 unanswered points. Richard Winn did give up 324 rushing yards, but they only gave up six yards passing.
Richard Winn crept closer to the lead in the first, when Noah Edwards took an interception back for a 23-yard pick six. Then, the Eagles snatched their first lead of the game in the second by means of a 22-yard passing touchdown from Zack Taylor to Johnny Edenfield.
Brandon Miller nailed a 24-yard field goal to stretch the Eagles lead out to 16-8 before the end of the half. Zack Taylor opened up the second half scoring with a 10-yard touchdown via the quarterback keeper.
Calhoun clocked their second rushing touchdown in the third, this time from just six yards away, but Zack Taylor sealed the deal in the fourth quarter. Taylor tallied the first of his two passing touchdowns in the fourth with a 25-yard pass to Jimmy McKeown.
He found pay-dirt again with his second touchdown throw to Johnny Edenfield, this time on a 43-yard pass. Calhoun dropped to 1-4 in their inaugural season of eight-man football.
Since losing the season opener to Wardlaw, the Eagles have won five of their last six and there seems to be no slowing their potent offensive attack. Richard Winn has averaged nearly 38 points per contest since that week one Wardlaw loss.
The next up to try and slow down the Eagles’ high octane scoring pace is going to be Laurens Academy. Laurens travels to Richard Winn in attempts to throw a wrench in both the Eagles’ momentum and their homecoming celebration.
