Larry Blair

BLAIR: A memorial service for Lawrence William Blair (Larry) will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 13, 2012, at Salem Presbyterian Church, 276 Highway 215 N., Blair, S.C. The Rev. Richard Hodges will officiate. Memorials may be made to The Babcock Center, PO Box 4389, West Columbia, S.C. 29170, or to Lutheran Hospice, 1505 Blanding Street, Columbia, S.C. 29201.

Mr. Blair died on Saturday, July 7, 2012, after an extended illness during which he was cared for at the Heritage at Lowman. Son of the late Andrew Franklin and Ruby Coleman Blair, he was born on Feb. 17, 1936, in Blair, S.C. He attended Monticello High School and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1958 and sustained a lifelong loyalty to his home community and to the Gamecocks.

His career was chiefly in the trucking business with his college friends Melvin and Barry Burton. His retirement years were spent aboard his boat, principally docked at Beaufort, S.C.

Mr. Blair was predeceased by his son Stuart Lee Blair, an only child. Stuart’s special challenges led Larry and Stuart’s mother, Barbara Blair Dixon, to be instrumental in the creation of The Babcock Center under the leadership of their friend Betty Duffie.

Survivors include one brother, Andrew Frank Blair; seven nephews, Robert C. Blair Jr., Andrew Blair, Michael Blair, all of Blair, S.C., Andrew Ligon of Huntington Beach, Cal., Blair Ligon of Cary, N.C., John Blair of McLean, Va., and James Blair of Atlanta, Ga.; and one niece, Kathy Blair Weaver of Emporia, Kan.

Larry also leaves his lifelong friends, the John and Jane Brooks Family, who were his loyal supporters during his illness.

In addition to his son, Mr. Blair was predeceased by one sister, Patricia Blair Ligon, and one brother, Robert C. Blair.
