Bengals Dispatch Westwood

Blythewood’s Jasrial Thompson (10) lays in the snowbird against Westwood.

The Blythewood boys’ basketball team (5-5) earned a 54-44 win over their crosstown rival Westwood (2-5) on Tuesday night. After the game Bengals head coach Zeke Washington was proud of his team’s effort.

“Our guys played with a purpose,” he said. “I give them all the credit.”

Westwood started the second quarter with a 4-0 run to take a slight lead at 14-12, but that would be their last lead of the game as Blythewood senior Kenny McCray hit a three pointer on the next possession to put his team on top for good. McCray ended the night with a season high 22 points including four buckets from downtown.

The Bengals will now prepare for a tournament at Fairfield Central high school starting with C.A. Johnson on Dec. 26.

The Lady Bengals basketball team (8-3) also defeated Westwood (2-6) Tuesday night, 43-20. Blythewood’s defense held Westwood to just two points in the first quarter and took a 16-8 lead at the break. To start the second half the Lady Bengals went on an 11-2 run fueled by seven points from senior guard Kierra Brown. Blythewood head coach Steve Inabinet gave a lot of the credit to his team’s defense.

Blythewood has an eight day layoff until they make an appearance in the Capital City Holiday Classic tournament against Hephzibah (Ga.) on Dec. 27.
